Fall 2013 -- Finding Beauty in the Everyday Tasks

Dear Friends

Being a mom to two little ones under four has been one of the greatest and most challenging journeys I have ever been on! Growing up and dreaming of motherhood, I imagined my days being filled with playing, laughter, and sweet moments. Don't get me wrong -- playing, laughter, and sweet moments DO happen often around my home, but so do the dishes, tantrums, snotty noses, dirty fingerprints, and waking up with the general feeling that my day today will probably look almost exactly like my day yesterday.

I have been learning to find beauty in the mundane tasks of the day. I'm finding out very quickly that it is easier to go about my days in irritation and frustration when I think about all the things that need to get done and how my little 'distractions' (aka: children) are going to ruin my groove. When I focus on the beauty, my tasks no longer seem daunting and my children no longer seem an obstacle.

When I do the dishes for the fifth time in a day, slowing down to let my girls help me makes everyone happy. Giving my Claire a little kiss and hug after I wipe her nose helps me to connect with her better. Stopping what I'm doing for ten to fifteen minutes to get down on the floor and play with my girls helps me see their sweet minds be engaged and how creative they are. Oh and there is always leaving the laundry to bake cookies and eat the dough together -- that is a must!

I don't think these days will become any less mundane as my journey continues, but I do hope that I am able to stop and capture the beauty a little more often.
