I've come to find that historical fiction, when it is at its best, not only brings to life a story of a time past, but explores deeper issues that are relevant today and this book is the best of the best. It's 1944 and Meggie and her family have to leave their home in Rockaway, New York to settle into Willow Run, Michigan where Meggie's father will help the war effort by building airplanes. Meggie's brother, Eddie, is fighting overseas. Not only will they leave the cool ocean breezes, they will also leave Grandpa with his German accent that causes people have suspicions about his loyalty. He's already had a swastika painted on his window, even in Rockaway.
But life in Willow Run is not at all what she expected with its slapped-together apartments and scorching heat. When Meggie meets Harlan and she is exposed to some questionable choices, how will she react? Her blossoming friendship with Patches as they share the secret opening in the common wall between their apartments shows her a life without many material possessions. By the two-time Newberry Honor-winning author, Patricia Reilly Giff, this is a story filled with courage, loyalty, and appreciating the bounty we each have. I appreciated reading this gem of a book and I'm betting you will too.
