Book Two of The Gateway Trilogy
Isobelle Carmody
In Night Gate, the first book of what will be a trilogy, Rage Winnoway and her four dogs encounter a strange creature and a magical gateway into a parallel world, peopled with mythical beasts, fugitive witches, and a dark city that is losing its magic. Rage's task is to find the wizard who created Valley and save the strange land from destruction. Somewhere along the way, she realizes that her quest might also save her mother, who is in a coma. Strangely, Rage's dogs become human in the land of Valley, and this metamorphosis proves to be pivotal to Rage's ability to succeed in her quest.
It also paves the way for Book Two, Winter Door, which takes place a few months later, when Rage's mother is out of her coma, but still unable to parent her daughter. Left with her strange uncle, Rage struggles to come to terms with her ability to travel between worlds in her dreams. Her real life is hard enough. Logan, the school bully, constantly picks on her, a dark, cold winter doesn't end, and fearsome beasts, who Rage suspects have escaped from a parallel world, roam the town. Both books address what it means to confront fear and despair and how courage and comradeship can make all the difference in finding hope and resolution for the dark places in our lives that threaten to keep us bound. These are great fantasies, evocative and inspiring.
