During one summer on a small island near Iceland, young Drifa plans to raise and release wild eider ducklings. Most of the ducks have left the abandoned island of Hvallatur, and Drifa's goal is to raise the eider to live here again and collect the fluffy eider down. Eider down is harvested (without any harm to the ducks), cleaned and sold to fill jackets and blankets, a much valued insulation for those living so close to the Arctic Circle. Drifa is able to gather more than 200 eggs from nearby islands, keeping them warm until they are ready to hatch on their new island. She then teaches the ducklings how to get to the water's edge and to find their own food, all the while trying not to become too attached to them.
