Julie Andrews Edwards, Emma Walton Hamilton
Illustrated by Gennady Spirin
Whenever I find a book that helps a child realize his or her own special gift to the world, I want as many families as possible to read it. Our lifestyles and values can sometimes obscure a child's true self and his real contribution as a human being. We place so much emphasis on achievement and accumulation of learning and degrees, on looking outside ourselves for approval and validation, that a child's real gift often goes unnoticed.
This is the story of Simeon, a humble musician in a faraway time and place, who feels he must better himself, find education and learning in the world of men, in order to stand before his true love and feel worthy of her. So Simeon sets out and has many adventures. But the more he educates himself, the more confused and overwhelmed he becomes, so that he ends up feeling he has nothing original to give at all. (Sound familiar?) It is only when he gives up his pursuits and returns to nature and simplicity that Simeon begins to hear and create his own true music. What a marvelous message for our children -- and for us! The illustrations are like illuminated medieval manuscripts -- incredible -- and, best of all, there is an accompanying CD with Julie Andrews Edwards reading the story. Give this book to your children and celebrate their innate beauty and gifts to the world!
(Note: These books are considered ''Imperfect'' as they have a black ink mark either on the top or bottom of the pages. Publishers often do this when a book goes out of print.)
