Rebecca Caudill
Illustrated by Decie Merwin
The hours fly by when I'm reading about Bonnie and her family in 1900's Kentucky. Bonnie and Debby Fairchild are determined to get rich quick. But what can two little girls do to make their fortune? Sell pictures for the mantle and bluing for the laundry, of course. And these girls take their job seriously. They visit Mrs. Sawyer, who asks them to stay for supper, and Mr. Tribble, who gives them a newborn lamb. Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker are so excited to see them that they ask them to stay the night!
The only thing left to do is spend their money -- and wait 'til you find out what they buy. What is most delightful is the lesson the girls learn: that the best things in their lives, the things that can't be bought, are what make them truly wealthy.
