Few other Christmas books have captured the magic of Christmas in the way The Polar Express has for so many. And it has done so without syrup or sentimentality. Indeed, it is appropriate for adults as well as any child who may already have had the inkling or been told by a friend that perhaps Santa doesn't exist. (I bring this up because the story is about a boy who mentions that his friend insisted that Santa isn't real, and I wouldn't be ready to put that thought into a six-year-old's head, although I know it happens every day.)

Where does one start in describing Van Allsburg's books? They're not wordy. He's a superb artist and storyteller but he doesn't get carried away with text. He gets carried away with his art, and we're all better off for it! (This book won the Caldecott Medal for the best illustrated book of its year.) The illustrations are in color, but since the story takes place at night, the colors are shadowy.

The story is one of a young boy who, though he is momentarily doubting Santa's existence, waits quietly in his bed on Christmas Eve straining to hear the ringing of sleigh bells, a sound his friend said he'd never hear. Instead, he hears the hissing of a train, a train that turns out to be the Polar Express, stopping at his house, waiting to carry him and children already on-board to the North Pole.

Wonder, suspense and tenderness fill the story, and our boy is ultimately chosen by Santa to receive the very first gift of Christmas: anything his heart desires. His choice will surprise you.

This quiet and beautiful book is about a boy who has now grown old, but who has managed to continue to hear the bells of Christmas just as anyone can who truly believes. The accompanying CD and cassette include an equally quiet and beautiful 16 minute 40 second reading of the story by Liam Neeson, as well as a Souvenir Bell from Santa's Sleigh.

We ship all orders from our warehouse in Spring Valley, California on the next business day (Monday through Friday) from when you placed your order. Depending upon your location, your order should arrive within 3 to 14 days.

We ship by both UPS and the U.S. postal service. We select whichever method provides the most efficient delivery of the items you've ordered. If you prefer one method over the other, please let us know. We need to have a physical street address for UPS. Priority Mail - Add $7.95 to your standard shipping rate above. After your order is shipped, you can expect it in 3-5 business days.

UPS 2nd Day Air - Add $11.95 to standard shipping (Continental U.S.). We need a physical street address. This guarantees you will get your order within 2-3 business days (excluding weekends) after we ship it.

UPS One Day Air - Add $21.95 to standard shipping (Continental USA only). We need a physical street address. This guarantees you will get your order one business day after we ship it (excluding weekends).

Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. Territories - We normally ship all HI and AK orders by U.S. Mail Parcel Post (normal delivery time is 2-4 weeks). Add $7.95 to regular shipping for PRIORITY MAIL; after your order is shipped, you can expect it within 3-10 mailing days. Add $15.00 to regular shipping for UPS 2ND DAY AIR; please allow 3-4 business days from the time your order is shipped. (We need a street address.) No UPS to APO/FPO addresses.

Canadian Shipping:
We ship all Canadian orders by air. Payment must be in U.S. funds. The order recipient will be responsible for any duty/custom charges when the package arrives in Canada. Air mail rates: Add 15% of your subtotal, with a $7.95 minimum charge.

International Shipping:

We hope to offer you international ordering online soon. In the meantime, you may call 619-670-5200, fax 619-670-5203, or email us at customerservice@chinaberry.net with your order to find out what your shipping charge would be. If you are having your order shipped internationally, UPS requires that you include a phone number for them to contact for delivery information.

We ship international orders (except Canadian) via Air Express only. While this ensures your order will arrive very quickly (within one week), it is also very expensive. (Shipping generally begins at about $65.00 for a one pound package and goes up with weight.)

As an affordable alternative, many of our international customers have their orders shipped to a friend or relative in the U.S who will forward the orders on to them.

Sales Tax

We collect sales tax based on the "ship to" address of your order. We are required to collect sales tax in California, which is where we are located. If you're shipping to California, please include tax as follows:

Calculate 8.75% of the total of your merchandise.

We don't collect tax on gift certificates.

Sales Tax Exemption

We are required by law to collect sales tax on any orders going to California. If you are a tax-exempt organization, we need to have a copy of the Exemption Certificate issued to you by the State of California on file before you can order tax-free. You may either mail or fax (619-670-5203) us a copy of your certificate. We ask that you place your orders by mail, fax (619-670-5203) or phone. If you are ordering by phone, please call our customer service line, 1-888-481-6744, between 6am and 6pm Pacific time.

Return Policy

If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, simply return it within 4 months for a refund of the item price or an exchange for another item. For items returned after 4 months, we will give you a Chinaberry credit for the purchase price. On the back of your invoice, we provide you with a return form to complete. Please include it with your returned item(s). If an item is defective or if the order was filled incorrectly, we will send you a prepaid return label. If you have lost your return form, click here to print one out. We will do our best to handle the transaction quickly and in accordance with your wishes.
