I love true stories. And this one, a story of love and caring for another in need, even if it goes against what other people feel is best, goes straight to the heart. It is the author's true account of Martha, an injured crow that his wife and son find one snowy afternoon in Russia. Martha allows her broken wing to be bandaged, readily accepts medicine and food, and sleeps in a basket on the author's drawing table. Despite the veterinarian's suggestion that Martha be put to sleep, the family decides to keep her, and she easily adjusts to home life. As the crow gets stronger, she grows in confidence, flying around the room and landing on their heads, exploring the artist's desk, and eating from their hands. She becomes accepted as part of their family.
