Tales for a Winter's Eve
Caitlin Matthews

I have wanted a book like this for a long time -- a collection of stories to tell or read around the fire when the winter season comes around. So many families ask me what stories to tell for the specific festivals of winter, be it Winter Solstice, Christmas, or Halloween, since, in the Celtic year, winter begins with this hallowed eve. Now I can tell them: Have Fireside Stories on hand every year. Brew up some hot cocoa, bake some cookies, and settle in by the fire for a long winter's night delight. Matthews, a very wise woman in these ways, has selected tales that capture the heart and essence of each festival, all the way through Candlemas, which is celebrated at the first of February and marks the end of winter.
What grand stories are here! There is an eerie Scottish tale called ''The Lonely Boatman'' for Halloween, a Christmas Eve tale from Austria, a January tale from the Czech Republic about the ''Twelve Brothers'' (wisely including the entire wheel of the year), the Twelfth Night/Epiphany tale of Baboushka, and many more. The paintings are bright and bold and surrounded by intricate borders that seem to honor and hold what is going on within, as each story that is ever told should be held and loved. If there is any gift worth giving, this one will warm you from head to heart!
