A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families
Robie Harris
Illustrated by Michael Emberley
In a light-hearted and non-threatening manner, this book conveys a lot of information about where babies come from. Beginning with assurance that it is normal to feel curious and even confused about how babies really begin, they touch briefly on reproduction in the natural world. They go on to explain how females and males are different, what takes place as each is growing up, what eggs really do and what sperm really do, and how they join to begin a baby. The text takes care to talk about how love is a part of that process and goes on to discuss different kinds of love -- the love for a pet, the love for friends and family, heterosexual love and homosexual love. Delightful chapters on pregnancy sustain the ''amazing-ness'' of the whole subject, and a hospital birth is illustrated and discussed, again in a spirited, non-threatening manner. Harris talks about twins and multiple births, chromosomes and genes, adoption, ''okay touches'' and ''not okay touches,'' HIV and AIDS, as well as the feelings an older sibling might have about a new baby and ways to have fun with the little one. A delightful run-down of how a new baby is celebrated the world over inspires the creation of celebrations for your family's own birth or adoption, and well, basically, it's all expertly handled.
This book is for the family whose child is old enough and ready for knowing more about where babies come from than simply ''Mommy and Daddy love each other so much that a baby started growing in Mommy's tummy.'' It is for the family whose child is ready to have a clear, factual understanding of human reproduction with a discussion of love and caring alongside. This is a book you'll likely want to read with the child on the younger end of the spectrum -- and I can almost guarantee you'll come across something you never knew. Truly, the story of eggs, sperm, birth and families is so amazing!!!
