I'm embarrassed to say how old I was when I finally learned how to use a compass. Not that I was ever lost at sea and needed one or anything, but compasses are really fun to know how to use. And here's a sturdy, well-made one that is perfect as an introduction to some of the ways that compasses are, when you get right down to it, little miracles. An accompanying booklet, nestled in the tin along with the compass, gives basic instructions on how to use it, as well as tips on what to notice in nature that will help you orient yourself. The compass dial is mounted in a wood frame and hung on an adjustable 28" cord. Actually, it is so well made that I can see this compass accompanying someone through life.
