Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant
Daniel Tammet
I haven't read a book this fascinating, heartwarming, and inspirational in a long timeāif ever! I believe the author is the only person in the world with ''synaesthesia and savant syndrome'' (a rare form of Asperger's syndrome) to have written about it in his own words. The result is an utterly compelling trip inside one of the most unique minds in the world today.
Daniel Tammett sees numbers and days as colors and textures. For instance, 37 is ''lumpy like porridge,'' while 89 reminds him of falling snow. Sequences of digits form visual landscapes in his mind. He can learn a new language within a few days (he speaks ten languages), and can recite from memory the number pi to 22,514 decimal places. (Makes my head spin just thinking about it.) On the other hand, he finds emotions difficult to understand, doesn't get jokes easily, and he's not fond of being touched.
Reading about his journey from a painfully awkward childhood to his highly successful adulthood at age 27, I found myself feeling challenged to embrace my own differences (we all have them!) and use them to shine in my own unique way. In that sense, this book is so much more than a biographical thriller. Its inspiration and genius holds a key that each one of us can use to be all we can be. By book's end, you'll feel like a better person just from getting to know this beautiful man.
