Jodi Picoult has been my favorite author for years now. She has outdone herself with Nineteen Minutes. I was so immersed in this book that my four-hour layover in Houston was not a problem. Because the suspense and mystery are so key to this novel, I hesitate to divulge too much, but I will say that the story centers on a high school shooting. First, you'll meet Alex, a judge and single mother in a small town in New Hampshire. We go back in time to her pregnancy, when she meets her midwife, Lacy. Mothering doesn't come easily to Alex, but with a role model like Lacy, she does the best she can. We then follow the close friendship that develops between Alex's daughter and Lacy's son. How could Lacy's son be anything but wonderful, raised by two mindful, loving, educated parents?
