A good read is a book you cannot put down, even though the children are clamoring for snacks and the dishes are piling up in the sink. A good read goes with you as you sleep and is there with you when you wake up. A good read is this marvelous novel, Once Upon a Day. One reviewer called it ''spellbinding,'' and it is. But it is more than that. It is beautifully written. The characters are poignant and heartbreakingly human. The story is remarkable.
Nineteen years ago, a famous man disappears from Los Angeles, taking his two children, Dorothea and Jimmy, and his mother. He keeps them isolated from any outside contact, in a utopian ''Sanctuary.'' The children grow up with books, encyclopedias, records, and a grand piano, but have no knowledge of television, computers, radio, or even newspapers.
