Growing Up Small in Mooreland, Indiana
Haven Kimmel
More by Haven Kimmel
If you have not had the privilege and pure pleasure of reading Haven Kimmel's book, you have a great gift ahead of you. It is a not-to-be-missed experience, I promise. I laughed out loud through this memoir, and reveled in the writing. (It is really more like finely crafted fiction.) Kimmel manages to write for adults from a child's perspective -- no easy feat, yet she pulls it off with aplomb.
We first meet her as Zippy, so named because she bolted around the house like a wound-up toy. You will fall head over heels in love with this girl and her family. Kimmel weaves joy and pain together seamlessly, as a child and a wise woman can do. There are hard and poignant places in Zippy's life, but because we see it all through her eyes, we can take it, knowing her lovely heart has turned the grit of life into pearls for us to swallow. This is quite simply one of the most delicious books you will ever find. (Suitable for teens, too.)
