Our culture is so obsessed with reality television that you can hardly turn the TV on without running across one of these shows. Orbit is a book about the ultimate reality show -- a man trapped alone in space, orbiting the planet.
Kip Dawson is an ordinary, average man. His children are angry with him over their mother's death and his second marriage is in trouble. He can hardly believe his luck when he wins a trip for a commercial spaceflight to orbit Earth. He is excited, however his family is anything but. His wife forbids him to go and his kids back her up. He goes anyway, promising himself he will make amends when he returns.
Through a series of events, he finds himself alone in the spacecraft -- the pilot is dead, there is no radio communication, and he is on orbit with no way to ever come down. It looks hopeless. In the cockpit is a laptop computer. Kip decides to write final messages to those he loves in hopes that eventually the craft will fall to Earth and the computer will be found. As he starts writing, he finds it therapeutic, so he continues to pour out his heart into this computer. What he doesn't realize is that he has triggered an automatic download so his words are reaching Earth in real time.
