A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction
David Sheff
VIDEO: AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Once I started reading this haunting, heart-wrenchingly honest memoir, I could not put it down and have not been able to stop thinking about it. I would call it required reading for every parent, for not only does it chronicle the harrowing experience of a son on drugs, it also provides the perspective of a father (and his family) every step of the way, as well as offering a lot of information about addiction.
It's all so compellingly woven together that we are swept along as the story unfolds. Please don't pass it by because it deals with a difficult subject; it is an unforgettable gem of a book.
David Sheff's keen insight as a journalist and his heart as a parent introduce us to his son, Nic. We learn about younger Nic, a talented athlete, gifted writer, and top-notch student. Younger Nic grows into older Nic, lured into the seductive world of drugs, whose heroes are tragic figures who lived in the glamorized world of drugs and alcohol. Nic becomes addicted to crystal methamphetamine, pulling his father and family in for a wild ride.
We feel David's anguish almost viscerally when Nic does not come home, and we silently support him as it becomes apparent that Nic needs more help than his dad can provide. I won't give away more details except to say that we follow father and son two steps forward and one step back in the awkward dance of recovery, all of which takes a profound toll on David.
I will say unequivocally that if you read this book, you will embrace the hope that we all have for our children despite their actions, and you will read a tremendously moving book that will stay with you for a long time, perhaps forever. It is just that good.
