The unique perspective of this recording sets it apart from all others. In it Weiss addresses the equality of the sexes and the value of love and honor. Each character is fully-formed: self-centered Narcissus, too proud to love anyone but himself; the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with his own statue; the sweet old married couple Baucis and Philemon, whom even the gods honor. The centerpiece of the tape, though, is Weiss's tale of the princess Atalanta and the hero Hippomenes, who must out-run her in a race in order to marry her. Taking care to portray these characters' intelligence, humor and insightfulness, the storyteller joins with a children's chorus to create a rendition unique to Weiss's style.
