A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy
Jeanne Birdsall
|
Meet the Penderwicks: four girls, 4 to 12 years old, their absent-minded father, and Hound, their dog. The family sets up house in a Berkshires cottage on a grand estate owned by Mrs. Tipton, a ''truly awful'' adult. Jeremy, her son, is quite appealing, however, and so begins a summer of great intentions -- to stay out of trouble, that is. The adventures and mishaps of this unusual troupe make for a jolly good read. It reminds me of books from my childhood by authors like Elizabeth Enright or Edgar Eager. Like those writers, Birdsall has an innate sense of the goodness of things; an old-fashioned, charming conviction that all is still right with the world, even in the midst of mischief! Our children deserve to feel and know that, too, which is why I recommend this National Book Award winner so highly.
