Hilari Bell
Dayven's 14th birthday is near, and like all other Tharn, he must be tested to see if he has the power of magic. He's full of trepidation because he doesn't want to be a wizard. And although he passes the test he wanted to fail, he learns there may be a way to fulfill his destiny. Asked to spy on wizards, he is apprenticed to Reddick, a wizard who shows him that there is not necessarily only one right way. Not only are honor and bravery a focus, but so is environmentalism: Dayven learns that the land the Tharn have been farming is dying. Will they decide to save it?
There is so much in this complex coming-of-age story: questioning loyalty, summoning courage, and having friendships both with one's countrymen and so-called enemies. Having a 14-year-old son, myself, I love this book's potent reminder about listening to your heart.
