Living what we know to be true in our hearts and having the courage to admit what we have done wrong are two of the greatest lessons many children need to learn on their way to adulthood. For most people neither comes easy. Most people must learn these lessons by walking on the wrong side of the line a couple of times. Paula Fox's brilliant One-Eyed Cat addresses just this theme.
Ned Wallis is a young boy, son of a kindly small town minister and a bedridden but extremely understanding mother. A well-meaning uncle gives Ned a rifle for his birthday. His father objects to the present and puts it in the unlocked attic, saying he knows he can trust Ned to leave it alone until he is older. Of course, the gun is enticing to Ned. Late at night on the night of his birthday, Ned sneaks up into the attic and takes the gun outside to fire just one shot. He aims into the darkness at something, he knows not what, and takes a single shot. Guilt-ridden, he looks up and thinks he sees someone staring out the darkened window of his house.
