100 True Tales from American History
Jennifer Armstrong
Illustrated by Roger Roth

This has to be one of the most brilliant and engaging ''history'' books I've read in a very long time. Maybe ever. For those who love history as well as for those who are inclined to fall asleep during history class, The American Story is an amazing find.

The author takes events (beginning in 1565 with ''The First City'') and tells their stories in a down-to-earth way that shows the individuals' humanness. She continues through the years in chronological order, describing events that she believes were pivotal in our country's evolution. There are tales of triumph, like Paul Revere and the first steps on the moon, as well as tales of tragedy, like the Donner Party and the great Chicago fire.

There are stories -- usually about 3-4 pages long -- about people who created dramatic change, like Charles Darwin, and descriptions of edge-of-your-seat suspense, like the Cuban Missile Crisis. Key inventions, disputes, technology, and politics are covered in a way that makes the reader appreciate so much more of what has gone into the making of the American story.

At book's beginning, Armstrong descriptively sets the stage for why she believes the particular events were such big players in our country's history. At book's end (the last story is of the 2000 Presidential election), she lists 23 ''story arcs'' (such as ''Immigrants,'' ''Cattle,'' ''Communication,'' ''Women,'' and ''Government and Law''), groupings of stories in the book that are in some way connected through their events. With these sets of stories, the reader has ready access to other stories with a common thread and can follow an idea through time and place.

The American Story is living proof that history can be made to come alive, make sense, and be useful. Armstrong's effort is awesome -- creative and researched beyond what most of us can even fathom. Plentifully illustrated, the book is one that is hard to put down -- except that there are 100 stories to read and you'll want to stretch it out.
