When I was reading this book aloud to my kids, my husband walked in and said, ''Oh, I loved that book when I was a boy. I think it was the most exciting book I ever read as a child!'' After reading it myself, I can see why. Snow Treasure tells a remarkable story (rumored to be true) of how a village of Norwegian children saved their country's fortune. The village was under Nazi occupation. Each day, teams of children hid bricks of gold bullion on their sleds and then rode the gold to safety. The children sledded many miles, right past the Nazi soldiers, to the bottom of a hill near a fiord -- a fiord where a ship and crew were waiting to take the gold to America. They hid the gold under snowmen for the crew to dig up in the night. For weeks the children heroically worked to help their country. With the Nazis watching every move, each sled ride was a matter of life and death. What a story this is! (7+ yrs. read aloud, 9+ yrs. read alone)
