Translated By Sir George Webbe Dasent
Illustrated by P. J. Lynch
|
When someone asks me what my favorite fairy tale is, I always choose this one. And now that P.J. Lynch has turned his magical hands to illustrating this beautiful Norwegian tale, I believe I can say there are probably very few other books that offer such a spellbinding combination of words and paintings. This edition is very special, rich and nourishing, as only good fairy tales are. A great white bear comes to a poor farmer's hut and says he will make the farmer rich, if he will consent to give him his youngest daughter in exchange. Thus begin the girl's adventures with her bear, who is really a bewitched prince she grows to love. When the prince disappears, the lassie must find him east o' the sun and west o' the moon -- an impossible place to find, but she does with the help of three strange hags with golden gifts, and the South and North Winds, who agree to take her there.
