A Tree for All Seasons
Ellen Obed
Illustrated by Anne Hunter
n the flurry of picking out a Christmas tree, we rarely think about its life before becoming the ''crown jewel'' in our home for the holidays. So, who besides us would like a Christmas tree? There are the black-capped chickadees, field mice, and white-tailed deer. There are the woodcocks, robins, and balsam twig aphids. Some find shelter, some find food, some find protection, and some come to start a family.
Each month of the year, we meet a creature who considers this tree just as important as we do. The ''story'' of the tree reminds us that we are part of the web of life, that everything has a purpose in nature, and that there are all sorts of ways to enjoy it, depending on who and what we are.
Colorful double-spread illustrations complement the text, which offers just enough information to help us appreciate that our Christmas tree was well-connected in nature. The younger child will enjoy the illustrations and the ''story'' about each animal, and the older child will appreciate the enhanced information about each animal at book's end.
