Rosemary Wells
Illustrated by P.J. Lynch
Considering the political information bombarding us at any given time, one has to wonder what our children think about the state of our government. To many, politics must seem like a truly distasteful and often impotent and corrupt place to stand up for what you believe is right.
It is important that our children learn about people who have made their mark on history not as a result of their associations with Big Interests and lobbyists, but rather for taking hard stands to make life better for as many people as possible. It helps to know that these public servants paced the floor, lost sleep, and sometimes went through their own versions of hell to pursue a vision with integrity.
Lincoln and His Boys is a wonderful book for a number of reasons, but perhaps the most meaningful to our children will be that it shows Lincoln's humanness. He adored his 4 sons (we usually only hear about Willie and Tad), and apparently it never occurred to him to separate his role as a father from his role as President.
