Janet Lunn
Illustrated by Lindsay Grater
Lucy lives with her family in the backwoods of Upper Canada. Christmas is coming, but Lucy and her little brother, Dan, know that they can't expect any presents because times are so hard. Lucy longs to give her family something special anyway, and she comes up with an exciting plan, one that has to include Dan so he won't give away the surprise.
There are a lot of challenges to her plan, and after much hard work and effort, it looks as if Lucy's surprise is not going to happen after all. The children have to persevere and come up with a plan that will brighten Christmas morning for all.
In light of the economic slump we are all facing, this story's timeless message seems especially appropriate. It is a sweet, loving message about how gifts from the heart carry the greatest light of all.
