A Visit with Mountain Gorillas

My adult daughter traveled to Uganda last year and had what she is sure is one of her life's peak experiences: seeing mountain gorillas in their rainforest home. She is not one to be dramatic, but her emotional description of the encounter still lingers in my heart and mind. Since she also is not one to give all the detail a mother typically wants to hear, I was grateful when this book crossed my desk and entranced by the story of the photographer who made his own trek to see the gorillas.

This fascinating and humbling account of his adventure kicks into gear once he buys his airplane tickets and decides which cameras to bring. There is a lot more to seeing mountain gorillas than getting outside the Kampala city limits! He has included photographs of the countryside and the humans who live there, but his text is what makes his journey so real.

Woven into his casual narrative is some geographical, social, and political background about this area. He tells us about the gorillas and their society, as well as how they've come to accept the rangers who protect them and lead a fortunate few humans into their world. The author is rewarded with the awesome experience of being led to the gorillas thanks to the guides' skillful tracking, and we are rewarded with photographs of the gorillas that are the next best thing to being there.

This book is exceptional because it truly tells a story. It tells of the author's journey and his impressions; it tells of the land and the people, and of the gorillas, themselves. Reading it gives you a new appreciation and understanding of how special these creatures and those who protect them truly are.

We ship all orders from our warehouse in Spring Valley, California on the next business day (Monday through Friday) from when you placed your order. Depending upon your location, your order should arrive within 3 to 14 days.

We ship by both UPS and the U.S. postal service. We select whichever method provides the most efficient delivery of the items you've ordered. If you prefer one method over the other, please let us know. We need to have a physical street address for UPS. Priority Mail - Add $7.95 to your standard shipping rate above. After your order is shipped, you can expect it in 3-5 business days.

UPS 2nd Day Air - Add $11.95 to standard shipping (Continental U.S.). We need a physical street address. This guarantees you will get your order within 2-3 business days (excluding weekends) after we ship it.

UPS One Day Air - Add $21.95 to standard shipping (Continental USA only). We need a physical street address. This guarantees you will get your order one business day after we ship it (excluding weekends).

Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. Territories - We normally ship all HI and AK orders by U.S. Mail Parcel Post (normal delivery time is 2-4 weeks). Add $7.95 to regular shipping for PRIORITY MAIL; after your order is shipped, you can expect it within 3-10 mailing days. Add $15.00 to regular shipping for UPS 2ND DAY AIR; please allow 3-4 business days from the time your order is shipped. (We need a street address.) No UPS to APO/FPO addresses.

Canadian Shipping:
We ship all Canadian orders by air. Payment must be in U.S. funds. The order recipient will be responsible for any duty/custom charges when the package arrives in Canada. Air mail rates: Add 15% of your subtotal, with a $7.95 minimum charge.

International Shipping:

We hope to offer you international ordering online soon. In the meantime, you may call 619-670-5200, fax 619-670-5203, or email us at customerservice@chinaberry.net with your order to find out what your shipping charge would be. If you are having your order shipped internationally, UPS requires that you include a phone number for them to contact for delivery information.

We ship international orders (except Canadian) via Air Express only. While this ensures your order will arrive very quickly (within one week), it is also very expensive. (Shipping generally begins at about $65.00 for a one pound package and goes up with weight.)

As an affordable alternative, many of our international customers have their orders shipped to a friend or relative in the U.S who will forward the orders on to them.

Sales Tax

We collect sales tax based on the "ship to" address of your order. We are required to collect sales tax in California, which is where we are located. If you're shipping to California, please include tax as follows:

Calculate 8.75% of the total of your merchandise.

We don't collect tax on gift certificates.

Sales Tax Exemption

We are required by law to collect sales tax on any orders going to California. If you are a tax-exempt organization, we need to have a copy of the Exemption Certificate issued to you by the State of California on file before you can order tax-free. You may either mail or fax (619-670-5203) us a copy of your certificate. We ask that you place your orders by mail, fax (619-670-5203) or phone. If you are ordering by phone, please call our customer service line, 1-888-481-6744, between 6am and 6pm Pacific time.

Return Policy

If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, simply return it within 4 months for a refund of the item price or an exchange for another item. For items returned after 4 months, we will give you a Chinaberry credit for the purchase price. On the back of your invoice, we provide you with a return form to complete. Please include it with your returned item(s). If an item is defective or if the order was filled incorrectly, we will send you a prepaid return label. If you have lost your return form, click here to print one out. We will do our best to handle the transaction quickly and in accordance with your wishes.
