How many times has this fairy tale been told? How many different ways? And yet, this new version is refreshingly original and new and gloriously beautiful. That's the magic of fairy tales. They are alive, so they can change and grow and still be true to themselves in the end. The author has placed Beauty's family in the nineteenth century, ''where money, convention and appearance meant perhaps even more than they do now,'' so he could see what happens to a family that loses everything. You remember the story. A wealthy man loses his fortune, and he and his three daughters must move to impoverished surroundings. The eldest daughters are haughty and spoiled, while the younger, Beauty, is good of heart and helpful to her father. She asks only for a rose when he returns from a journey, not rich dresses like her sisters demand. Yet it is this very rose that gets her father in trouble with the Beast.
