Jeanne Willis
Illustrated by Jan Fearnley
Any description of this book simply has to include a reference to The Runaway Bunny, that classic so many of us knew while growing up. In the spirit of ''I'll love you no matter how you behave,'' these two books have much in common. Yet, Mommy Do You Love Me? is in a class by itself as far as exuberance, joy, and cheery illustrations go.
Little Chick, like all little ones, wants assurance that Mommy loves him. ''More than words can say,'' she replies. Even when he makes a funny face, even if he finds the muddiest puddle on the farm and jumps in, even if he comes in last in the race? Of course. And so, in utter ecstasy knowing that he's loved no matter what, Little Chick cheeps and chirps and crows and shrieks and screeches and squawks... very loudly! Very, very loudly, in fact. So loudly that Mommy asks him to be quiet, which he is simply too excited to be.
