This book provides a spectacular look into the everyday lives of normal families around the globe, focusing specifically on their average weekly diet. Better than any history lesson, this visual extravaganza, photographed by Peter Menzel, illuminates the true disparity between the haves and the have-nots on our planet. What does it mean to live on less than $2 a day? Anyone (child or adult) seeing the difference between what a family in Chad eats and what a family in France eats can immediately grasp this concept. Poverty becomes real.

While the book explores the heartbreaking issue of hunger, it is by no means a sad book. It is filled with joyful expressions of all the cultural beauty and diversity our world community offers. Stunning photography drops you into the lives of families around the world. Happy, shining faces grace the pages, along with many facts and figures explaining how each country fits in the larger world economy.

The text is as engaging as the photos. Each chapter paints a lively picture of the normal lives of children all around the world, whether they are fetching the family's water by donkey or celebrating their birthday in a pub. The richness of the human spirit shines through, even in the direst of circumstances. Leave this book on the coffee table and wait for the questions. Look at it yourself and start discussions. It's truly a feast for the eyes, the heart, and the mind.
