I almost feel defeated before I even start. Based on the response this book has gotten here at Chinaberry, there is absolutely no way I will be able to convey to you how special it is. But here goes:
You don’t have to like pigs to like Toot and Puddle (who are pigs); they endear themselves to you right off the bat just because of their personalities and of how the story unfolds from the start. If you do already like pigs, then Katie bar the door! -- you’ll be happier than pigs in -- um -- mud when you open it.
Toot and Puddle live together in a house in Woodcock Pocket. Puddle is a homebody (homepig?) and Toot loves to travel.
Read more... One day in January, Toot decides to set off on his biggest trip ever. And not surprisingly, Puddle decides to stay home. Still connected in a way only good friends can be, they think of each other a lot, despite their physical separation. While Toot is sloshing around with hippos in Africa (and sending a postcard to that effect), Puddle is pirouetting back on Pocket Pond. When Toot is galloping through the Egyptian desert on a camel, it's maple sugaring time back home for Puddle and he's wishing his pal could share some pancakes with him.
The year rolls on, through the seasons, and every now and then a postcard arrives from Toot while Puddle is doing an outstanding job of being a homebody -- only there is a little mutual missing going on. Then one morning in November, Toot wakes up (somewhere in Italy, it appears to me) and knows that it is time to go home -- much to a very ready Puddle’s delight.
The book ends nearly a year after it began, the 2 friends re-united, life again sweet -- sweeter than it's perhaps ever been before. And that's the story -- an engaging and charming story involving 2 distinctly different personalities.
But then there are the illustrations! Detailed and softly colored in a way that will make you and your child pore over each one and find the subtle humor and charm there, the art, in combination with the story and text, will have you loving pigs before you know it. But more importantly, it will have you loving the book.
