Ruth Stiles Gannett
Illustrated by Ruth Chrisman Gannett
This is a modern fairy tale about one young boy, Elmer Elevator, who befriends a baby dragon. What gives these classic stories texture and has made them endure for almost 50 years is how down-to-earth emotions run, how easily we can relate to dragon and boy, how the spirit of loving friendship and adventure shine through.
The action comes at a steady, simple pace and pencil/charcoal illustrations on nearly every other page keep the visuals lively. This is a fine early reader book, but an occasional long word (like ''rhinoceros'' and ''suspicious'') may be too challenging for a child who hasn't been reading alone for a little while. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of these books, the publisher has issued this hardcover edition which combines the 3 books into a single volume.
