The Story of a Mother, A Son, and Their Second Chance
Joan Ryan
How many times have I wished for a second chance with my children to be more patient, more loving, more understanding? Joan Ryan got just that, but it was no picnic, that's for sure.
She chronicles her experiences with her 16-year-old son, Ryan, who suffers a traumatic brain injury after a skateboard accident. While her experiences with him up until then have focused largely on struggling to work with his learning disability, ADHD, and some quirky behavior at home and school, she now is faced with a son in a coma.
When Ryan wakes up, his mom gets a second chance at motherhood, being there with him as he takes his many firsts—words, steps, food. The silver lining is that Joan now recognizes what a heroic young man her son is.
You'd think this would be a downer of a book, but it is just the opposite, inspiring and true. As a mother, I was truly moved by this touching memoir.
