Raising Confident and Compassionate Kids in an Age of Self-Importance
Polly Young-eisendrath

A high school teacher wrote, ''If I could buy one book for parents and educators of kids, this would be it.'' Every day this man sees kids who carry a deep sense of ''entitlement'' and ''specialness''; are self-absorbed, with very little ''sense of other''; have been given everything, but cannot make it in the world; are rude and arrogant and have little regard for elders, the less fortunate, or larger social needs and values; and are, ultimately, deeply insecure and isolated human beings. Polly Young-Eisendrath, a Jungian analyst, psychologist, and practicing Buddhist, wrote this book in an effort to grapple with this growing phenomenon and explore what can go wrong with the best-intentioned desires of the ''positive self-esteem'' parenting practices so treasured for the last three decades. It is a brave and astounding book, written with compassion, wisdom, and equanimity.

She discusses the dangers of child-centered ''helicopter'' parenting, of not allowing our children to risk or fail and being overly involved in every aspect of their lives. And the dangers of ''idealizing'' our children, which is very different from actual love. Ultimately, she makes a plea for helping children become ordinary human beings with emotional intelligence, conscience, core values, and empathy for others. We will all recognize ourselves in these pages. The question is how will we choose to respond?
