Charlotte Pomerantz
Illustrated by James Marshall
How you could resist a book that begins, "See the piggy, See the puddle, See the muddy little puddle. See the piggy in the middle Of the muddy little puddle. See her dawdle, see her diddle In the muddy, muddy middle. See her waddle, plump and little, In the very merry middle."
This text faces an illustration of a young pig bedecked in clothes and bonnet, gleefully plopped in a mud puddle, and holding a balloon. One by one, her father, mother and brother enter the scene, too, urging her to wash up. Eventually the whole family ends up wallowing merrily in the mud. While a little child will delightfully relate to the plot, the book's main appeal lies in the silliness of the giddy text and the equally ridiculous illustrations.
