Illustrated by Jules Feiffer

I have no idea how I missed THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH when it was the Harry Potter of the 60's! But when customers began expressing their surprise that it wasn't in our catalog, I asked Ann about it, and sure enough, she said it WAS in our catalog years ago. Every once in a while we just need a gentle nudge from our customers to bring back a favorite book. Now that I've finally read this book myself (and have forgiven my elementary school teachers, small town librarian, and my mother for not sharing this book with me!), I am so delighted to re-introduce THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH!

The story is about a perpetually bored 10-year-old boy named Milo. When Milo finds a mysterious looking package in his room, he decides to open it and follow the enclosed instructions - not because he is really interested, mind you - but because there is nothing better to do. Following the instructions, he assembles a tollbooth, gets in his old toy car, and puts the pedal to the metal.

Thus begins the adventure of his life when he finds himself in a kingdom with cities such as Dictionopolis and Digitopolis and with such characters as a not-so-wicked "Which," a giant watchdog named "Tock," and a boy who is growing down instead of up. Milo then finds himself on a mission to rescue the princesses of Rhyme and Reason, and, well, let's just say Milo is no longer feeling very bored.

Maurice Sendak refers to this book as a masterpiece, and Anna Quindlen says it is "the best book ever." I say THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH is guaranteed to snap anybody out of a case of the doldrums - as well as substantially increase his vocabulary and math appreciation! (A perfect classroom read-aloud!)
