Patricia Polacco
Illustrated by Patricia Polacco
Having worked at Chinaberry for over 18 years, I'm surrounded by the best of the best in children's books. The Junkyard Wonders is now among my top five favorites. With so many children being labeled as special or different these days—from ADD to Autistic and everything in between—the perspective in this book is like a breath of fresh air.
As a young girl, author Patricia Polacco was diagnosed as dyslexic and placed in a special class. This book is actually a true story from her childhood, detailing her magical year in Mrs. Peterson's special class that was referred to as ''The Junkyard.''
As dreadful as that term sounds, this is one of the most heartwarming and triumphant stories imaginable thanks to the ingenuity and heart of this teacher. The highlight is the last page where the author tells us what these kids (thought to be ''misfits'') grew up to accomplish in life! I'm still smiling thinking about this!
