LISTEN TO AUTHOR TALK ABOUT THE EXPECTED ONE
Sometimes a book comes along that is so powerful, so moving, and so life-impacting that you find yourself thinking about it night and day and have to tell everyone you know about it. This is one of those books. More than simply an outstanding read, it just might change you.
So much has been written about Mary Magdalene throughout history -- but has anyone actually gotten it right? This author researched for 20 years in order to write The Expected One. It is a novel, but it is based on facts she uncovered during that research -- facts that will surprise you.
McGowan weaves a spellbinding plot that takes us from Jerusalem to Los Angeles to New Orleans to southwestern France, giving us intriguingly diverse characters along the way. Our heroine is an American author, Maureen Paschal, who opens her lectures with: ''Marie Antoinette never said 'let them eat cake,' Lucrezia Borgia never poisoned anyone and Mary Queen of Scots was not a murderous whore. By righting these wrongs, we take the first step toward restoring women to their proper and respected place in history -- a place that has been usurped by generations of historians with a political agenda.'' There are her Jesuit priest cousin, an extremely wealthy benefactor, secret societies that date back thousands of years, and a documentary film maker. Flashbacks to the time of Jesus add unforgettable richness to the story as we journey back in time to the years in which He walked the earth. New light is shed on Mary Magdalene and her relationship with Jesus and his followers. The revelations from McGowan's research may make you see Jesus and his time here on Earth in a very different light.
By book's end, you will not be exactly the same person you were when you first opened it. At the very least, you will know you have just read a page-turner you'll not soon forget and will realize there is truth to another statement our heroine makes in her lectures: ''History is not what happened. History is what was written down.''
