This charming little book has so much to offer! It is fascinating historical fiction about a Russian Jewish family from the Lower East Side of New York City whose successful doll repair shop suffers when World War I breaks out and they can no longer get the imported doll parts they need. The three girls, aged eleven, nine, and seven, help their parents create new dolls with available materials, and these are eventually bought by F.A.O. Schwartz, the famous toy store.
The story is based on the true story of how the beloved Madame Alexander dolls first began, which adds to its interest. It also delightfully captures the customs and life of a Jewish family, letting readers know the rich details of life in those times, despite there not being much money.
