Kate Morton
I read this book while I was in England recently, wanting to deepen my immersion in all things British: gateways into secret gardens, crumbly castle towers, the lives of generations of family, and places where ''ancient walls sing the distant hours'' and mystery dwells.
Kate Morton's book contains all this and more. She is a masterful spell-weaver, following in the footsteps of Daphne du Maurier and Mary Stewart. I couldn't put the book down, and it continued to haunt me long after I turned the last page. It begins with a lost letter, found and sent after fifty years with the return address of Milderhurst Castle.
