It's not every day that we read a book so extraordinary that we drop everything to turn it into an audio. The City Under the Back Steps, an out-of-print book loved by several generations, is one such book. We are elated to introduce you to this brilliantly produced audio version.
You'll meet Craig and Jill, two children who mysteriously shrink and find themselves living under their family's back steps. There, they are immersed in the world of ants -- their lives, their social order, and their struggles (some of which is a bit violent).
This edge-of-your-seat tale is based partly on scientific fact, partly fantasy, and by story's end, your child just might be captivated enough to find out if it's true, say, that Queen ants can live to be 17 years old (true!), that ants have ''pets'' such as crickets and beetles (nope), or that ants capture ants of another species and then put them to work for them (yep).
Some of life's universal lessons are also woven into this story, such as the value of putting yourself in someone else's shoes (or antennae!). (Though because this book was written almost 50 years ago, there is some gender stereotyping.) If ever there was a story to ignite an interest in the natural world right in our own backyard, it's this one. A richly entertaining treat for your child's heart, mind, and imagination.
