Illustrated by Else Wenz-vietor
I am always looking for stories about Advent, the time traditionally celebrated before Christmas. Those weeks of anticipation are helped along with stories and activities. I was delighted to discover this charming story, first published in Germany in the 1920s, which is told one day and page at a time starting with December 6th, Saint Nikolaus's Day, and ending on Christmas Eve.
The story is a folktale about Fritz and Gretl, whose father is ill and can only be cured by one of the Winter King's Christmas roses. The children set out to find the Winter King, even though the journey is fraught with hardship and danger. The quest for hope and healing and returning light is a universal experience, beautifully captured in this little story. Bring it out every year to start the Christmas season! The book comes with an attached red ribbon to mark your place each night.
