The Autobiography of Santa Claus & How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas
Jeff Guinn
More by Jeff Guinn
When I learned that Santa's autobiography was nine hours of listening, I couldn't believe it. Santa Claus is, of course, quite a celebrity, but does anyone, even the beloved saint, have that much to say about himself? I remained open and boy, am I glad I did. By listening to Santa Claus tell his story, I have learned more about the history of the world and America than I ever dreamed possible. I also now know the origin of every Christmas custom ever celebrated. What a clever and remarkable achievement this story is. I am recommending it to every family I know.
I love that Santa starts out saying, ''You're right to believe in me...'' Once you begin these tapes, there is no way that the entire family is not going to believe in Santa Claus forever after. Guaranteed. His story begins in Lycia, where, as a young boy called Nicholas, he wants to secretly give away money and presents to the needy. Nicholas becomes bishop when he grows up, and that's how the saga begins -- one that stretches across time and space and continents of the world. Magically, the saint never dies. His generous wish to serve children of the earth makes him live forever, and anyone who joins him receives the same favor (from Ghengis Khan to Teddy Roosevelt!). There are twenty-four chapters in all, so you can listen to one a night, leading up to Christmas. Simply superb!
I always suspected that Santa Claus had the support and guidance of a good woman, but I'd never heard much about his wife, that is until this CD set landed in my lap. As it turns out, Mrs. Claus is a strong woman with a captivating story that rivals only that of St. Nick. In fact, she was determined to make a difference in the world and gave gifts to the poor and needy for years before she met Nicholas. After she joined forces with Santa, they, along with some of the most significant people who shaped history, really launched the custom we know of as Christmas. The secret behind their ability to go long distances quickly and live incredibly long lives, as well as many other intriguing details are revealed in this holiday tale for the whole family.
When the first signs of a threat to the budding Yuletide tradition occur, Santa is in the New World planting the seeds of Christmas there, while Laila remains behind in England where those pesky Puritans seem bent on taking the fun out of everything, especially Christmas. When a law is passed that actually punishes those who follow this treasured celebration, our holiday heroes spring into action to save the day, literally! Since this saga covering hundreds of years has its roots in the actual events of the day, I felt as if I was experiencing the most appealing history lesson ever on a subject near and dear to my heart! And what's more, once it was over, I wanted to start back at the beginning since there’s so much remarkable detail.
While this is considered a sequel to The Autobiography of Santa Claus, it stands on its own, so you don't need to listen to Santa's story, but you may find yourself utterly compelled to since it's bursting with the same kind of rich historical elements, fascinating facts, and globe-trotting adventure. Those who have already had a taste of Jeff Guinn’s magic will absolutely adore How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas. In this not-to-be-missed treasure, the foreword is read by Santa himself!
