Edith Nesbit
These two unabridged stories are deliciously beastly. And beasty. Centered on mythical creatures, they have just the right amount of suspense to keep listeners glued to the CD player and into the dilemmas of all involved. There's Lionel, the boy king who becomes fascinated by the forbidden ''The Book of Beasts'' in the palace library.
When a real dragon escapes from the book, things turn awesomely complicated, but all turns out well in the end. As it does with ''The Dragon Tamers,'' in which a dragon living in a blacksmith's basement keeps things, let's just say, interesting, and ultimately turns into the first pussy cat known to mankind. You'll have to listen to find out how it all comes together! (Although we recommend this for ages 6 and up, younger children may also enjoy it, depending on their tolerance for suspense.)Colorful detail and authentic situations in the life of each animal make these not only memorable stories, but also learning experiences that will stick with the listener for a lifetime. My bet is that these tales of ''Lotor (the raccoon) on His Own,'' ''Osa's (the bear) Moving Day,'' and ''Hazard (the coyote) Helps the Pack'' will be listened to again and again and again. There is also nothing quite like hearing what goes through Pandora's mind when, during the time when Mother Earth was young, all was sweetness and light, there were no adults, and there was nothing for children to do but play all day long, a mysterious box arrives at her home. A package with voices that beckon her to open it, which she can't resist doing. As we come to learn, it contained the whole collection of earthly sorrows. Once again, the descriptions of what comes to pass are thought-provoking and magical in their own way. The good news is that even though Pandora's actions changed the world forever more (in not such good ways), hope, too, was in that box—and it is hope that we humans can turn to time after time to see us through. Truly well-told and important stories for all growing minds.
