Illustrated by Ian Haywood
Love of animals and the rich gifts of compassion and generosity make this a wonderful book, one I wish we would all read, considering the very real plight of abandoned animals today. When a young girl and her family are out shopping, they discover a little green frog in the road and want to make sure he stays safe. So they give him to Daddy to bring home after they've finished shopping. Next they see a poor little kitten who seems to be lost, so they give him to Daddy, too. And so it goes, with more and more animals, as Daddy finds a container for each one (jar, basket, pocket, etc.).
With the addition of each new animal, your little ones will be able to see the previously rescued animals by lifting the flaps of the containers on the gently-illustrated pages, making this a memory game as well. Even after Daddy puts his foot down (and for good reason, which I'll leave a surprise), our little friend says, ''But Mommy says there's always room for one more.'' Besides being a great book for animal lovers, this would be a thoughtful gift for families welcoming another child. It radiates with familial love as well as love and compassion for all living things.
