Four billion American Chestnut trees once made their home in the eastern woodlands. By 1950, there were none -- all due to a deadly blight that killed every American Chestnut tree in its path. We recently met some artists from North Carolina who use discarded American Chestnut split rail fences to create beautiful artifacts. These beautiful refrigerator vases are carved from fences more than 100 years old. A removable vial has been inserted for flowers, and a sturdy magnet has been attached to the backside. Naturally, each one is different and has its own unique beauty, created by surviving all the elements of its time. And that sentiment has to be one of the best messages you can post on your refrigerator! (For use on flat, non-textured surfaces.)
