Ukrainian Egg Decorating
Although making Pysanky is a traditional Easter and Christmas activity in the Ukraine, we discovered the joys of making them when these holidays weren't even imminent. The remarkably colorful eggs that result from the intense dyes make this a fun family project. Although none of our eggs turned out as flawless or as elaborate as traditional pysanky (whose creators work a lifetime to perfect their art), they all were striking and unique.
This kit includes 6 rich, deep dyes, 3 kistkas (the instrument with which the beeswax is applied in order to resist the dye), 2 beeswax cubes, 21 designs and instructions. The powdered dyes, once mixed, can be kept in jars for up to a year. You will need: jars for dyes, spoons, paper towels, white vinegar, varnish or fixative, a candle, and of course, eggs.
