SEE PETER YARROW AND FRIENDS SINGING THIS CLASSIC SONG
The song that our children most often requested we sing to them at nap or bedtime (probably in the car, too) was Puff, the Magic Dragon. There is just something about it that is calming, sweet, bittersweet, and very special. Puff and Little Jackie Paper frolicking. Jackie bringing him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Traveling on a boat with billowed sail while Jackie kept a lookout on Puff's gigantic tail. Oh my! It is completely understandable why this song has endured for generations.
The bittersweet part came when Jackie presumably grew up and Puff ceased his fearless roar. I'm just guessing here, but perhaps no one has ever felt like tackling creating a children's book based on this wonderful song because, in our imaginations, we feel sorry for Puff and are sad to hear the story end this way. To put it in book form would have been too in-your-face.
Eric Puybaret, though, in a brilliant illustrative twist in the land called Honahlee, ensures we are left feeling awfully good about how it all turns out. As Jackie Paper departs, another friend, a little girl, appears, and she and Puff begin the cycle anew. The girl is wide-eyed, Puff is ecstatic to have another playmate, and all is well.
I heartily recommend this book for the children in your life. It includes a CD featuring Peter Yarrow, his daughter, Bethany, and cellist Rufus Capodoccia. There is an instrumental version, too, as well as two additional folk songs.
I can almost promise that, years from now, you will look back on the days of reading and singing Puff, the Magic Dragon as some of the sweetest times in your family's lives.
