Product FAQs:
Q. Why are the Fair Trade Prosperity Hens you offer in your catalog more expensive than the ones I see in stores and in other catalogs?

A. (from the organization supplying our Prosperity Hens) These strands of birds are common in Rajasthan. One can purchase them in the markets of Jaipur and Pushkar. In India, enterprising shopkeepers are all too quick to market ''unbleached'' cotton as ''organic'' and the same goes for ''fair trade.''

Because of this, we personally travel to India, each year. We stay with the various cooperatives we buy from. We visit with the women, gossip with them, ensure that their working conditions are as they like them, that the money we send is getting to them, not just somebody touting a fair trade enterprise that isn't one.

Being from India, I am all too aware of this problem, and it means a lot to me personally to support genuine cooperatives and grass roots movements.

We are intentionally not fair trade certified with the FTF in America, because I actually don't like how shallow their certification process is! Also, we do carry some items that are not fair trade: our chai glasses and our stainless ware, ... and we make that known to our customers.

The organization we get the hens from, is a cooperative that has been in existence for forty years! We have been working with them for the past 11 years.

The cooperative supports several projects in addition to the crafts: solar power education globally, education for children in rural areas, gender equality... We know we pay more for the hens we buy from them, than we would pay for them had we bought them in the Pushkar market nearby. We could bargain the market price down to peanuts. But that's not our philosophy at Indika.

In addition, the quality of the fabric used on cheaper hens is bulk screen printed with a brass bell. In our hens, the fabric is block printed, at the same cooperative, providing additional employment opportunities in the printing department. Also, the bells are individually hand made, as they were in the old days, when these ornaments had goat-bells at the end of them.

This quality and care that goes into the construction of the hens we get, to me, is more traditional and authentic than the quicker and mass produced (although, yes, less expensive) ornament strands one finds in markets around Rajasthan.

Prosperity Hens << Prev page

Hens have been a symbol of prosperity in India for centuries, given as gifts to celebrate life's milestones. These particularly charming hens were created in Northern India by a women's craft co-op. The women carefully choose the colored glass beads, jewel-tone fabric, silver ornaments, and the unique tinkle of the hand-formed bronze bell to reflect their individual personalities, so each strand is unique.

These are a Fair Trade item, ensuring that the women who hand make them are paid a fair wage. You may find similar hens elsewhere for considerably less, but that pretty much guarantees that the people who made them were not paid a fair wage.

Hang a strand of the 30 colorful hens in your doorway or kitchen to inspire and invite a bit of prosperity into your own home.
